9 Quick Tips to Beat Seasickness
Let’s face it, nothing ruins a great day on the water more than having your breakfast revisit you on its way to feed the fishes! Some folks seem to have an immunity to such worries but if you’re like me you know what I’m talking about. I feel your pain!
I absolutely love being on the water, be it diving, cruising, fishing or just day tripping with good friends however, all my life I’ve struggled with the specter of nausea which seems to rear its ugly head about half the time I venture out on the water!
Naturally, I’ve tried plenty of remedies, most obviously Dramamine or any generic version containing its active ingredient, Meclizine Hci, with varying degrees of success. I’m not vouching for any particular one as it often seems that a combination of things works best.
So! Without further ado, here are: 9 Quick Tips to Beat Seasickness:
1. Join a band! There is a well-known pressure point approximately three finger widths down the inside of your forearm from the base of your hand. Steady, firm pressure there can alleviate that woozy feeling if you catch it early enough. There are several bands and bracelets on the market designed for the purpose.
2. Ginger! No, not the shipwrecked actress famously portrayed by the lovely Tina Louise back in the day! A fresh cut slice between the cheek and gum, a piece of candied ginger and even ginger ale have been known to work well.
3. Speaking of ginger, there are several essential oils that can help ease your discomfort when Poseidon is up to his shenanigans! Try two or three drops of ginger, peppermint or fennel oil on the back of the tongue. My favorite is peppermint. Be sure to use only pure oils.
4. Avoid fatty or fried food! This may seem obvious, but it took me a few rough days at sea to learn to not start my nautical adventures with bacon, eggs and cheese on a buttered roll! My New York friends know what I mean. Avoid acidic foods like citrus fruit too. Your best bet is always sticking to bland foods if you anticipate a rocky day on the boat. Think pretzel sticks.
5. Booze! A sure-fire way to spend your long-anticipated day of fishing or diving clinging to the rail and trying to avoid eye contact with the ship’s mates and other guests is to party like a rock star the night before or the day of your big adventure. Particularly if you double down with a couple of cheap cigars. Trust me on this one, don’t do it! Especially if you are taking motion sickness pills or antihistamines.
6. Get some shut-eye! No activity is ever enhanced by lack of sleep and some are down right dangerous when you are sleep deprived. Make sure you are well rested to give your body a fighting chance when there is a little too much motion in the ocean.
7. Land ho aka Heads Up! When you find yourself on a boat bucking like a bronco, find the horizon line and keep your eyes on it as much as possible. Don’t try reading or looking down for any period of time. I’ve seen much stouter stomachs than mine fall victim because of this!
8. A newer theory I’ve been testing is wearing an ear plug in the ear opposite of my dominant side. For me that is my right ear. The theory is, the mixed signals from your ears will be ignored by your brain in favor of what your eyes are reporting. This worked for me recently. The dizziness you feel after all, is an effect of your brain being unable to reconcile what your inner ear is reporting and what your eyes are seeing.
9. Relax! Now this may seem like a no-brainer too but anxiety is the perfect gateway to nausea. Don’t spend all your pre-trip time fretting about being seasick. I know it can be difficult but if you focus on the excitement and anticipation of catching that trophy fish or shipboard activities or potentially seeing a huge school of Manta rays glide by you, you can help minimize your stress levels which is always a good thing!
Well, that’s it! I wish you well on your next aqua adventure! If these tips were helpful, help us by sharing them with your friends!

Medical professionals have long prescribed cannabis to combat nausea brought on by cancer therapies.
